Friday Night Feel & Heal ACA Meeting

This meeting has been suspended for summertime.

Please check back after September.

Every Friday Night

6:30-8:00 PM

Newcomers welcome. Open Meeting. You do not have to have an alcoholic parent, just good old fashioned family dysfunction growing up!

Location

This is at the Reading Room at the Seed of Life Essene Temple –> which is under construction. Look for the Sacred Sites Sign Post on Google Maps and pull into that driveway… we will be in the shipping containers.

7505 US HWY 290

7 miles west of town towards Hye at Rocky Creek.

We are meeting at the shipping containers. There is heat in winter, but currently no air conditioning in summer, so we’ll sit outside in the evenings under pretty solar lights.

CURRENTLY The restroom facilities are “off grid” and primitive.
If this is a concern for you, please go b4 u come!

What happens at a meeting?

Meetings are intended to be a safe place. Most meetings begin with the Serenity Prayer, some readings, and introductions.

We read from the World Service Organization (WSO) approved literature: The ACA Fellowship Text, also known as the Big Red Book, and from the Strengthening My Recovery daily reader.

We share our experience, strength, and hope; we offer compassion and understanding.  We also have the right not to share, unless we are ready.

You do not need to register or sign up. You just show up when you are ready. We identify ourselves by first names only to preserve our anonymity.

You are invited to share only if and when you are comfortable. You are NOT obligated to speak or share. You can just sit and listen.

We welcome you to join us.

What is an “Adult Child?”

ACA defines an Adult Child as “someone whose actions and decisions as an adult are guided by childhood experiences grounded in self-doubt or fear.”  Pg. 302 of our ACA Fellowship text

Here are some of the questions we use to help identify ourselves as an Adult Child:

  • Do I fear authority figures and angry people?
  • Do I see most forms of criticism as a personal attack?
  • Do I have difficulty identifying feelings?
  • Do I involve myself in the problems of others? Do I feel more alive when there is a crisis?
  • Do I judge myself without mercy and guess at what is normal?
  • Do I recall anyone at my home drinking or taking drugs or being involved in some other behavior that I now believe could be dysfunctional?
  • Did one of my parents make excuses for the other parent’s drinking or other behaviors?
  • As an adult, do I feel immature? Do I feel like I am a child inside?

Answering yes to any of these questions may mean you are suffering from the effects of growing up in a dysfunctional household, whether it was due to alcoholism or another addiction, workaholism, perfectionism, or some other factor or form of abuse.

Emotional Sobriety

During our recovery work through the ACA Program, we begin to feel a noticeable freedom from the damaging effects of our childhood. We are healing from the trauma and neglect of our childhood. We gain emotional sobriety by reparenting ourselves. We learn to love ourselves, perhaps for the first time in our memory.

As part of this healing we are changing, or, in many cases, moving away from our relationships that have been controlling and without feelings or trust.  We begin to feel connected, both to ourselves and to others. This connectedness in relationships is characterized by the freedom to express our feelings and associate with people with whom there is mutual trust and respect. We bring our True Selves to our relationships. We know we have something to offer that is different from unhealthy dependence.

This is what ACA recovery looks like. It addresses our soul rupture from our primary relationships with our family and caregivers. With Emotional Sobriety, we live with feelings, spirituality, and our true identity. We experience ACA’s 12 Promises. At long last, we understand what it feels like to live “happy, joyous and free.”

Can I Bring Children?

It is not appropriate to bring children to an ACA (Adult Children of Alcoholics) meeting; these meetings are designed for adults who identify as adult children of alcoholics or dysfunctional families, and are not intended for children to attend.

Why you shouldn’t bring children to an ACA meeting:
  • Confidentiality:

Discussions at ACA meetings often involve personal and sensitive experiences that may not be suitable for children to hear.

  • Distraction:

Children could disrupt the meeting by being noisy or needing attention, impacting other members’ ability to participate fully.

  • Inappropriate content:

Topics discussed in ACA meetings may include complex emotions, past trauma, and coping mechanisms that are not appropriate for children to engage with.

What to do if you need support for a child:
  • Seek specialized groups:

If you are concerned about a child’s well-being due to a family history of alcoholism, look for child-specific therapy or support groups designed for children of alcoholics.

  • Talk to a professional:
Consult a therapist or counselor who can provide guidance and support for both you and your child.

Friday Night Shabbat Service Fellowship
